Can stress trigger eczema?Yes, eczema can definitely be triggered by stress. Tiredness and illness can also set it off as well as the more typical triggers mentioned below.
Regardless of what starts it up each time the most important aim when trying to improve your daughter’s eczema is to keep her skin moist.
As soon as it gets dry it feels itchy, she will scratch it which makes it feel more sore and dry making her itch more. And so starts the vicious itch/scratch cycle. These are some tips which should help:
Use emollients both in the bath or shower and adidas superstar after drying. Typical ones include bath oils such as Balneum or Oilatum followed by a moisturising cream once a day. My favourite is Cetomacrogol A cream as it is not too greasy but keeps the skin really soft which stops those dry patches appearing.
It is also very cheap and available over the counter or on prescription. Your GP may well have favourite treatments certainly most are available on prescription and are worth using long term.
Avoid irritants. Try non biological washing powder. Avoid washing with soap unless it is glycerine soap (eg Pears) or Neutrogena. Dress in pure cotton or cotton mixtures instead of wool or synthetics. Consider whether contact with animals could be bringing on her eczema do you have any new pets? Heat, sunlight and cold all stir up eczema so try to protect from these as far as possible
Steroids. You mention wanting to avoid courses of steroids. This sounds like tablets of steroid which would be totally over the top in her case. However two to five days of steroid cream can be very effective in calming down flare ups of eczema.
Your daughter would probably only need a low strength such as hydrocortisone 0.5 per cent to one per cent. These are available over the counter or on prescription.
Steroids work by suppressing the body’s own over active immune reaction in eczema. Unfortunately they can have side effects if not used properly and the fear of these can put some parents off wanting to use them at all. If very strong steroids are used over large areas of skin for a long time they can stop the body producing its own supplies of steroids and can slow down growth.
Too much steroid can also stretch and thin the skin itself, allowing blood vessels to show through and adidas originals making it lose its elasticity.
However steroids can be safe if they are used as creams or ointments directly on the skin. It is important that the weakest effective concentration of steroid is used to keep the eczema under control.

Natural remedies. Some of my patients have found a natural cream called SK cream helps with eczema.
